What is Disk Cleanup Utility?

Disk Cleanup Utility is a maintenance service for computers that are included in MS Windows and designed to free up space on the computer’s disk drive. The Disk Cleanup Utility first analyses and searches for the files that not useful anymore and then remove them. There are different manifold categories for which Disk Cleanup might be helpful for:

How to Enable The Disk Clean-up Utility?

 

For some odd reasons, Microsoft has disabled the Disk Clean Up Utility tool as the default settings. It is placed within an optional set of features named “Desktop Experience”. But no need to worry, you can easily enable it by following the following simple steps:

  • Go to “Programs & Features” – in “Features” section install/enable the “Desktop Experience“.
  • Restart your computer after a successful installation.
  • Copy the referred files to your server from the link. This step will stop the Desktop Experience tool from installing other unnecessary utilities such as sound recorder, themes, etc.
  • Once you have copied all the files then move them to the following locations:
    • Cleanmgr.exe to %systemroot%System32
    • Cleanmgr.exe.mui to %systemroot%System32en-US

You are now ready to launch the Clean Utility tool; you just need to follow the given steps to install it via Command Prompt:

  1. Open Command Prompt
  2. Type the command – c:\windows\cleanmgr.exe /d
  3. Use your user path at c:\
  4. Press ENTER

How to Use it?

Once you are done with the installation process of Disk Clean Up Utility, then you are ready to free up space from your hard drive. Here are some guidelines which might help you in doing it:

  1. Click on the “Sart Menu”
  2. Type Disc Cleanup in the Search Bar
  3. Press Enter
  4. It will show you a list of drives, select the drive on which you want to run the Disk Clean-up.
  5. Select the Files you want to delete
  6. Click OK
  7. Click on Delete Files

To delete the unnecessary system files, you can click on Clean up System Files.

For deleting the Shadow Copy and Restore points go to More Options Tab, then click on Cleanup.

Troubleshooting

If you are facing some problems such as “Disk Clean-Up Stuck” at certain deletion processes, then the following tips might help you to solve them:

  1. Run Disk Clean-Up as Administration
  2. If Disk Clean-Up is stuck while deleting folders/files on any application, then delete those folders/files manually. Be logged in as Administrator while doing so.
  3. Use Command Prompt:
    • Open Command Prompt
      • Type command – sfc / scannow /offbootdir=D:\ /offwindir=D:\Windows\
      • Here D:\Windows is your Windows installation path, and D:\ is your windows Drive letter.
      • Press ENTER
